Pressure System Breakdown When Equipment Fails Under Stress

Fig. 01 - Loss Example

Low Water Condition

Due to a low water condition in a boiler, the heating section of the boiler had to be replaced. Because a replacement of the damaged part was unavailable, the entire boiler was replaced.

The Causes

Pressure system breakdown accounts for just 5% of all equipment breakdown claims. That doesn’t make it any less disruptive for commercial businesses, farming operations, or homeowners when it occurs. Factors contributing to pressure-related breakdown:

  • Control failure
  • Low water level
  • Operator error
  • Scale buildup
  • Vibration

Where it Happens

  • Boilers
  • Hot water heaters
  • Pressure vessels (liquid, vapor, gas)

How it Happens

  • Bulging
  • Bursting
  • Exploding
  • Imploding
  • Overheating
  • Rupturing

Prevention

Simple steps can be taken to minimize the risk or impact of potential loss caused by pressure system breakdown.

  • Chemical treatment
  • Annual maintenance by qualified tech
  • Qualified/trained operators
  • Regular blowdown
